CofC has added another home game on the schedule, for this Saturday against Columbus State (a Division II program from the Peach Belt Conference). This game will be held at 1pm on Saturday, with free admission at TD Arena.

Welp, we've pulled off some escape jobs this season but that one takes the cake. CSU was up 6 with 22 seconds to play and choked this one away at the line and on defense. Charleston outplays Columbus State by a thin margin in OT and avoids disaster.

Guess the team didn't learn much about humility after losing at home to a winless Elon team. Same lack of effort to start the game, and just like Elon last Sunday, never managed a lead in regulation.

For those fortunate enough to miss this one - Columbus State thoroughly outplayed Charleston for the majority of the game. Ball movement, offensive rebounds, minimal turnovers, shot-making, etc.

Had Charleston lost at home to a DII team with a 5-6 record, we'd deservingly be the laughing stock of the conference and college basketball for the day. Fortunately Zep had more pride than the rest of the roster combined.

Might as well focus on the positives...

Zep has always struggled when he has to take that many shots and dominate. He typically ends up being wildly inefficient. Not today. He took things on his shoulder and thrived.

The other upperclassmen(Osi, Willis) were solid. They are who they are... Flawed, but they are pretty consistent with what they bring to the table. Willis does not want to take an alpha role. Its just who he is.

Tucker and Copeland were both super disappointing. Not sure if they took things for granted and stayed out last night or what. Both guys have also kind of fallen off. Not sure if it is fatigue or what.

Great opponent.
High energy, Zone D, Undersized quick big man.
Its exactly the secret sauce that we struggle with.

Got to clean up the defense on drives to the basket.

If we had played an average CAA team like that, we lose by 15-20. It was nearly one of the worst games in CofC history. Good thing there was only like 300 or so people there to see it. Maybe 500 max.

That was one of the weirdest games I’ve ever seen in the way that it ended. Down 6 with :22 left, then Willis got to the line and made two, CSU made a turnover that I think was over and back, then Willis made another two, then CSU missed a 1 and 1, and Zep got to the line with 3 seconds left and made both.

CSU was just playing with a chip on their shoulder all day and it showed. Now let’s hope we stay healthy and get next week’s games in. UNCW has been coming off a long COVID pause.

CSU better than their records suggests. Give them credit.
Lots of familiar problems- too many subs whose shot selection is to be heroic. Yecch! Same as a turnover. Obvious that we need to get an assistant that can coach the bigs. We can't let opponents own the paint on offense and defense.
BTW- after catching up a little from being down 6 with 22 left, we were again down by 6 with 18 left. The main reason CSU lost is poor free throw shooting and a bad turnover. So a learning experience for them. Final stats close except they won battle of the boards and they lost at the line.

Good programs don’t barely squeak by D2 teams. This is getting ridiculous. Almost repeated the Wojcik days when we lost to Anderson.

Thanks for reading. The first draft was even spicier, but I cooled off over time.
