Sailing National Champs again

Post by hungry »

For the fourth time in school history, the College of Charleston sailing team won the Leonard B. Fowle Trophy, awarded annually to the best overall sailing team in the country.

“Coach Greg Fisher, coach Ward Cromwell and myself are extremely proud of how the team performed this week in a wide range of conditions,” College of Charleston assistant coach Mitch Hall said. “We had a consistent season which helped us win the Fowle Trophy for the best all-around team, which shows how strong our team is across the board.”

The College of Charleston also won the Fowle Trophy in 1988, 1998 and 2012, and it has finished runner-up three times.

The Cougars placed fourth overall after a series of close races against Yale, Boston College and Stanford in the finals held over the weekend on Narragansett Bay at the Team Race National Championship.

The Cougars also placed fifth out of 18 teams at the ICSA Women’s National Championship on May 28 and fourth out of 16 teams at the ICSA Team Race National Championship on May 31.

Coach Fisher hired to run US Olympic Sailing team. They want to tie in more with college sailing (article in today's P&C) so makes sense to hire he who has won 4 of last 8 Fowle trophies. (Saban of sailing?) He wisely made it a condition that, while USOS is located in Newport, R.I., he can stay here. More practice in January & February here?
Nice reward for great job here. Like he said, he's still only a phone call away.
