Hello-first post and hope y'all can help me answer some smack-talk at my office in Columbia. One of my co-workers (a disgrunted Gamecock) is answering the Clemson folks by taking jabs at C of C's football team.

What is the true story on this? We had a team which was purportedly undefeated, but Univ of Florida's web site says they beat us in 1910-1912. Did we play more than one year? We are undefeated since... 1914 is it?

Thanks! Go Cougs! Beat CSU!

No mention of football in this entry, other than not having a football program:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/College_of_Charleston

I had never heard of CofC ever having football, but I'm not a good source, either.

The quote is "undefeated since 1914" because we haven't fielded a team since then. At least, I think that is the year they got rid of the team. I heard that it was because the president's (of the school) son was on the team and broke his neck while playing, but I don't know if it's true and don't know how you could find out short of looking at archived newspapers or campus rags/yearbooks.

Hey AE! Love the site, by the way.

Here's the word I just got from Karen Jones, which she sent to a co-worker of mine who asked her this morning:

We DID have a football team. The last mention of a team in the yearbooks is in the early 1920's. The reason some folks say we were undefeated is because the History Club did a t-shirt with a picture of the last team and the t-shirt said: "College of Charleston Football - Undefeated since 1922" We were "undefeated" because we didn't have a team after that date. (I'm not exactly sure of the year, but it was around that time.)

So, there you have it! The rumor about the President's son is wild--had never heard that!

We beat the Citadel in 1910. They won 40-0 in 1912.

I went to opening day at Cincinnati (Reds) this spring with another Chattanooga grad...he got his masters at Xavier in sports administration...so what else do two sports admin grads do but go visit athletics departments :) (we went to Cincy and Xavier...my buddy knew people in both departments...we got tour of both campuses and facilities...and both arenas)

Sorry, long story short...Xavier carries a whole line of "Xavier football, undefeated since 1973" merchandise in their bookstore.

BTW...I have a t-shirt that says the same same thing (since 1984) for Mocs baseball.

I just noticed that y'all have a t-shirt in your bookstore too...

If I'm not mistaken, one of the earliest Heisman Trophy winners -- maybe even the first -- was Jay Berwanger from the University of Chicago, which later de-emphasized football, and as far as I know, doesn't even have a varsity program any more. Point being, football is great if you have it, and still great if you don't.

The Citadel and cofc have played 12 games.

The first meeting was in 1906, The Citadel won 23-0.

The subsequent games went like this:

1907 (2 games): The Citadel 4, cofc 7
The Citadel 5, cofc 7
1908 (2 games): The Citadel 0, cofc 0
The Citadel 27, cofc 0
1909 (2 games): The Citadel 36, cofc 0
The Citadel 21, cofc 5
1910: The Citadel 0, cofc 11
1911 (2 games): The Citadel 21, cofc 0
The Citadel 21, cofc 3
1912: The Citadel 40, cofc 0
1913: The Citadel 72, cofc 0

The Citadel's all-time record against the Cougars in football is 8-3-1.

That 1913 game was the last time the two schools played football against each other. That same season, The Citadel beat Furman 75-0. It was not until last year the The Citadel scored 70 points against an opponent, and again it was done twice in the same season, against Webber International (76-0) and against VMI (70-28).

I cannot find any data on the Cougars' football team after the 1913 season.

After a little research....

The CofC appears to have dropped football in 1913 after what was a very bad season. It went like this:

10-11-1913: Furman; L 38-0
10-18-1913: The Citadel; L 72-0
11-3-1913: Furman; L 30-0
Date unk 1913: Newberry; L 39-0
11-27-1913: Presbyterian L 12-6

However, there IS a record of CofC playing football in 1921. It looks like you dropped football in 1913, and then tried to pick it up again in 1922. That season went like this:

10-14-1921: Erskine; L 74-0
10-15-1921: Nerberry; L 41-0
Date unk 1921: Rollins (FL); L 41-0

The fact that you played only three games in 1921 might lend some credibility to the story that something happened to cause CofC to cut the season short. Also, it looks like you killed two birds with one stone, playing Erskine and Newberry in two consecutive days.

It appears that CofC started football in 1903. You played one game, it was a 6-0 loss to South Carolina on 11-21-1903.

Your record and opponents get interesting in the 1904 season. You played the Charleston Academy, Charleston High School, Porter Military (now Porter Gaud), USC's JV team. To finish the season, you played your own JV team (a 22-0 win) and your own Freshman team (a 18-0 win). Playing high school teams was not uncommon back then. Most colleges and universities have high school teams in their old schedules. I love one that UNC played back in 1900.... the NC Deaf and Dumb Institute. Also, many military units had football teams. The Citadel played the PArris Island Marines once or twice, as well as Camp Davis. Also, Navy ships sometimes had teams, The Citadel played the USS Mercy.

In 1906 you played just one game that is recorded, and that is the game against The Citadel that year.

In 1907, in addition to the two games against The Citadel, you played USC again and lost 14-4.

In 1908 you played USC, Porter, and some private club called the "Athletics." This may be a YMCA team, they were numerous back then. That game was a win, 5-0.

In 1909 you played El Cid twice, and USC once. The Cougars lost that one, 17-11.

1910 was an interesting year. You beat El Cid and you also beat the Charleston Navy Yard team. You lost to USC 8-0. You also played Davidson here in Charleston and lost, 27-6. Then to end the season you traveled to Gainesville, FL and played the Florida Gators. You lost, 34-0.

In 1911 you lost all five games you played. They were against USC, Davidson and Florida again, and The Citadel twice. The Florida game was played in Jacksonville. The Davidson game was in Charlotte.

1912 was a bad year. The Cougars played and lost 4 games. The combined scores of all those games were 273 against, 0 for. The loss to The Citadel was the closest (40-0). The other three games were against Florida, Stetson, and USC. Stetson was the worst loss; 87-0.

Your all time record was 8-32.

It appears that your only opponents from those days who still play football today are The Citadel, USC, Florida, Newberry and Presbyterian.

Now get busy, restart your football team, and come play in the SoCon! ;)

Nice work brother, the definitive history of cofc football has been written by a graduate of The Citadel. I have looked for this info before and have never been able to find it in this detail.
