Big news for Joe Chealey today. He has been signed by the Hornets summer league team.

Official: @hornets release Chris Cokely, James Demery, Brice Johnson, Ben Lammers, Demetre Rivers & Alec Wintering from mini-camp roster. Team adds G Joe Chealey (College of Charleston) to roster which now stands at 14 players. #BuzzCity

Awesome for Joe. I was sweating his chances this close to summer league beginning, and was gonna flip my sh*t if Cohn was put on a summer league roster and Chealey missed out. The Captain will have a chance to make an impression on MJ and Mitch.

Chealey's odds are really long.
Being one of the last guys added on summer league team doesnt change that. He is like a camp body for them.

Better off going to Europe and making serious cash and a name for yourself like Dontaye and Drew did.
Below is Drew with the game winning BLOCK?!?!?!? to win the italian championship

No minutes for Joe in a tight first game. Disappointing but not the end of the world. A lot of the teams will switch up rotations every game or two, and Joe was the last to get acclimated. Hopefully he gets some burn tomorrow. These summer league games are begging for solid point guard play and defense.

Hopefully he got to meet MJ.

Sun game at 5 pm. Watched Fri expecting to see Chealey to get at least a few minutes. Not sure I can sit through another of these games.

Joe finally got some burn yesterday and posted a very efficient line: 12 minutes, 7 points, 1/1 from 3, 4-4 from the line. 1 for 3 from the field but converted FTs on both missed shots. 4 rebounds, 1 assist and 3 turnovers but he seemed to move the ball well and get to his spots.

Led the bench unit in points and rebounds. Hopefully he gets more time tonight.

Team-high 6 assists for Joe (0 turnovers) in 21 minutes last night. Team-high +19 while on the court. Only 4 total points in his last 2 games however.

Play at 6pm today. A start would not be a surprise.

Not a bad last game with 14 points and 9 rebounds. The big question now does he sign overseas or take an invite to the Hornets training camp in early Sept. The last 2 games he was obviously the best healthy point guard on summer league roster. Grahams injury could keep him out a good 4 months so Joe would have a good chance of being on the roster to start the season. He would make a lot more money overseas but does he turn down a solid chance at making an NBA roster for the money. Good position to be in either way

Good on Joe for making the most of his opportunity. I think his chances of being on an opening day NBA roster are slim, but he has at least proven that he can hang. The Hornets are pretty set at point guard with Kemba, Tony Parker and their 2nd round pick Graham, even though he's injured now. Hopefully teams with PG issues (his hometown Magic for example) took note of Joe in recent games.

Joe could do really well in the G League and be a guy who's at the top of the call-up list. Marcus Thornton and Daniel Dixon were both there last season. Not an apples-to-apples comparison, but Dixon was on the Celtics summer league team again this year and barely played.

It is pretty cool that Joe has an advocate in Buzz Peterson, who complimented him twice during the game yesterday (skip to the 6:10 mark): http://www.nba.com/games/20180714/TORCHA#/video

Also, how good is to it be MJ's ex-roommate? Buzz got run out of UNCW in 2014 and is now an NBA Assistant GM??

He's looking for a call from the Hornets or maybe another NBA team.
Today's P&C interview

Slim chance he is on opening day roster. That could depend on how long Graham is out with his knee injury. Good chance he could start for Charlottes g league team.

Well-deserved for Joe. After reading that P&C story, it's crazy to think that he didn't have a spot on the SL roster until the first day of practice, worked his way into the rotation, got a start in the final game and now has a training camp invite.

There are a lot of new contract structures in the NBA's CBA that could be beneficial to Joe. He could get a non-guaranteed deal, a two-way deal, a deal that gives him a $50k bonus (in addition to G league salary) if he plays for the Greensboro Swarm and other variations.

If he doesn't make the final roster, getting to see him play in Greensboro isn't the worst thing. He'll be on teams' radars.

Great day for the program too. I expect a few more Cougars to follow suit over the next few years.

Chealey came in and played solid minutes of garbage time almost bringing the Hornets back to the win. Got em the lead but they lost it.

Chealey has a contract with the Hornets for 838,000. He could still end up on the d league team but he would be first guard up

Rick Bonnell: So Joe Chealey joins J.P. Macura as the Hornets’ two-way contracts (development guys headed to Greensboro Swarm to play for Joe Wolf).

Great news for Chealey. Will be playing in the G-League, and can be brought up to the NBA for a maximum of 45 days this year.

Cam Johnson has been signed on a tryout deal to the same Greensboro team as Chealey. Big opportunity for him. Deserves to get a shot at a professional career.

When the above was posted Greensboro had 18 on their training camp roster. Looked today and they have 15. Can still listed Final cut has to be made before their first game on Nov 2nd. I think they are allowed 13 on regular season roster

Cam got left off the final roster. Didn't help that the Swarm brought back former NC State guard Cat Barber, and then the Hornets assigned one of their draft picks - PG Devonte Graham - down to the Swarm.

Hopefully Cam can carve out a nice pro career elsewhere.

Went to Joe's second game on Saturday. He played well. It's pretty evident that the offense runs better with him at the reins. I'm starting to see how G League players could frustrate teammates. Just about everyone is gunning for a call up and trying to impress scouts, so there is a lot of isolation and ball hogging. Not the best environment for a player like Joe, but he's playing pro ball, on a two-way deal, and looks very composed on the court. Even wowed the visiting crowd at our game with a crossover.
